Handel was born in Germany and spent most of his life in London, but he grew into a composer during his four-year sojourn in Italy during his early 20s. In Florence and then in Rome, he learned to craft sacred music and wrote the dramatic cantatas that would later shape his masterpieces in the fields of opera and oratorio.
