Robert Venturi, who has died aged 93, served along with his wife, Denise Scott Brown, as the reluctant leader of architectural postmodernism. His muscular, witty writings and their intelligently contrarian buildings shaped the development of architecture from the 1970s onwards well beyond the limits of his native US.
