Stocks open higher after stronger-than-expected retail sales rise

Stocks opened higher Friday after data showed a larger-than-expected rise in June retail sales. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 75 points, or 0.2%, to 35,061, while the S&P 500 was up 0.3% at 4,374.16. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.5% to 14,615.25. Retail sales increased 0.6% last month, the government said Friday. The Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.4% decline.
