'The Handmaid's Tale' Could Be So Much Better. But First It Has to Leave Its Star Behind

A 200-year time jump at the end of Margaret Atwood's novel jarringly recontextualizes Gilead, offsetting the gloom of Offred’s story. The Hulu version could accomplish something similar—or at least stop repeating itself—if it weren’t so invested in maintaining a uniform tone, setting and cast of characters.
